A Different Way to Live
We believe there is another way to live.
A way that asks us to consider not how much we can have, but how little we actually need.
A way that values a small, well-designed home over a big house filled with things. A walk to the garden over a drive to the grocery store. A shared tool shed over a garage full of equipment we rarely use. Neighbors who know one another over fences & roads that keep everyone apart.
We believe our government, homes, and communities should make it easier to live the lives we want to live, not harder.
That means smaller homes. Human-scale communities. Shared resources. Walkable places. Bicycles instead of cars when we can. Gardens instead of lawns. Healthy food grown close to home. Time spent outside. Time spent with one another.
It means consuming less and sharing more.
It means building with the natural world instead of constantly fighting against it.
We don't believe that living simply means giving up a good life.
We believe it can mean creating a better one.
A life with more connection. More community. More time. More purpose. More food grown with our own hands. More opportunities to help one another. More moments spent outside and fewer spent behind a windshield.
For generations, we've been told that bigger means better. Bigger houses. Bigger cars. Bigger lots. More stuff.
But bigger isn't necessarily better.
Maybe we've simply forgotten how much is enough.
Bear Cross Ranch is our attempt to explore that question.
It's a small, off-grid community project designed around tiny homes, shared resources, permaculture, healthy food, and connection to the land. It's a place to experiment with what happens when we put people, community, and nature back at the center of how we design a place to live.
It isn't a finished model.
It isn't meant to be perfect.
It's an experiment.
A place to learn. A place to teach. A place to gather. A place to try something different and share what we learn with others.
Because we don't think the future needs more of the same.
We think it needs new ways to live well with less.
And we believe that when we build smaller, share more, consume less, and reconnect with the land and with one another, we don't necessarily end up with less.
We might actually end up with more of what matters.
About the Founder
I’m Darilyn. For a long time I've been traveling throughout North America seeking out people and places experimenting with different ways of living. I've visited organic and regenerative farms, off-grid communities, tiny-home projects, alternative housing developments, car-free neighborhoods, ecological centers, animal sanctuaries, and intentional communities. I've taken courses, volunteered on farms, worked alongside food producers, and talked with the people actually building and living these models. From Earthships in New Mexico and a car-free development in Arizona to organic farms across the West, a container-home project in Colorado, and community-based projects throughout Wisconsin and beyond, I've spent years gathering ideas, asking questions, and learning what works…and what doesn't. Bear Cross Ranch is where I'm bringing those lessons together and putting them into practice.
